Wirral West MP Margaret Greenwood has welcomed the fact that the UK Parliament has this week become the first national Parliament in the world to declare a climate emergency.

This comes after a Labour motion was passed without a vote after several hours of debate in the House of Commons.

Labour was calling for Parliament to declare an environment and climate emergency, and for the Government to take action commensurate with the emergency.

Margaret Greenwood MP said:

“I know from the large number of emails that I have received that many Wirral West residents feel very strongly about climate change – and rightly so.

“It is vital we protect our environment – both in Wirral and globally.

“Complacency about the UK’s limited progress on climate change threatens dire consequences for our society and the natural world.

“Labour declared an environment and climate emergency in March 2019, but the government has resisted calls to follow suit. Despite this, Parliament has now done so.

“Labour has pledged to work as closely as possible with countries that are serious about taking urgent action.

“We need a Green Industrial Revolution to deliver the scale of change needed and this will require government intervention.

“As well as tackling the environment and climate emergency, a Green Industrial Revolution will create hundreds of thousands of good jobs right across the UK and help deliver the future we need.

“Young people have the most to lose if we fail to take action.

“Now that Parliament has taken this decision, we need to see action from government.”
