Margaret Greenwood MP is urging groups in her constituency to look into applying for money from the new National Lottery Community Fund, after stats obtained from the House of Commons Library showed that over the past five years, Wirral West has received less than other local constituencies.

According to the figures, between 2013 and 2018, Wirral West received just £337,653 in lottery money, compared to £562,121 for Wirral South, £637,347 for Wallasey and £4,218,468 for Birkenhead.

The National Lottery Community Fund – formerly the Big Lottery Fund – is the largest funder of community activity in the UK and awards money raised by National Lottery players.

Margaret Greenwood MP said:

“Last year, over half a billion pounds of National Lottery money was given out to projects across the UK, with more than 11,000 projects benefitting from this.

“Projects that have recently been funded in Wirral West include the development of a nature area at a local school, the installation of outdoor equipment at another school, the provision of volunteering opportunities working with rescued animals for people who face barriers such as engagement and mental health issues, and a summer drama programme for children and young people who have experienced homelessness.

“Funding received for these projects is very welcome as it can make a real difference in communities. However, I would like to see more local groups and community projects in Wirral West benefit from the National Lottery Community Fund.

“If groups or organisations have ideas in mind for projects, they can discuss them and receive funding advice from the National Lottery Community Fund’s advice team on 0345 4 10 20 30.

“I would urge any groups in Wirral West who have an idea for a project to take advantage of this opportunity so that they can bring their ideas to life.”

Malin Joneleit, Public Affairs Officer for the National Lottery Community Fund, said:

“We distribute money raised by the National Lottery to thousands of organisations across the UK which help communities make the changes they want to see, and better the lives of the people who live in them.

“Our approach to grant-making focuses on the skills, assets and energy that people bring, and the potential in their ideas.

“We passionately believe that communities thrive when people are in the lead.”
