A Wirral MP has joined forces with Dementia Together Wirral to call for more volunteers to get involved and help out at events that the organisation puts on to support people from across Wirral who live with dementia and their carers.

Margaret Greenwood, MP for Wirral West, recently attended Dementia Together Wirral’s Memory Café at Flissy’s in Thurstaston which takes place on the second Wednesday morning of every month.

Dementia Together Wirral is also involved in fundraising for dementia friendly cafés and puts on activities such as singing, cinema and other pastimes. It runs information stalls promoting and sign-posting both its own services and those of others at local festivals, assisting newly diagnosed people with information.

Margaret Greenwood MP said:

“It was a real pleasure to visit the Memory Café at Flissy’s in Thurstaston to meet the volunteers and service users and to find out more about Dementia Together Wirral.

“The Memory Café, which takes place at different locations, offers people with dementia and their carers the opportunity to socialise and share experiences in a friendly and supportive environment.

“The Memory Café is just one of the many and varied regular events that Dementia Together Wirral puts on.

“The volunteers do an amazing job in giving support to people with dementia, but more are needed to ensure Dementia Together Wirral can continue to provide these vital services.”

"I would urge anyone who thinks they may be interested in becoming a volunteer to get in touch with them. Even if you can just help out at just one or two events a month, that extra support would be very much appreciated.

“No one should have to face dementia alone and I would also recommend anyone who could benefit from the support that the group provides to get in touch with Dementia Together Wirral.”

Allan Grogan, chair and trustee at Dementia Together Wirral, said:

“We facilitate a social setting where people living with dementia and their carers can relax in an understanding environment for support and friendship.

“With Margaret’s support we can help to raise our profile so that more people can find out about our work and the help we provide to people living with dementia.”

If you have some spare time to volunteer with Dementia Together Wirral or if you feel that you, or anyone you know could benefit from attending their events, please get in touch with Allan on 07511 777 126, or via allan.grogan@gmail.com to find out how to get involved. A website and formal e-mail address will be up and running in early September.

Since Margaret’s visit to Dementia Together Wirral, it has received confirmation of registration from the Charity Commission having issued certificate no. 1179533.
