Margaret Greenwood MP met with representatives of Citizens Advice in Parliament and highlighted the importance of the service that they offer to people in Wirral West.
In all, Citizens Advice helped over 460 people in Wirral in 2017. The main types of issues that people in Wirral West come to Citizens Advice for help with are benefits, Tax Credits and debt.
However, Citizens Advice also helped with many problems involving financial services, housing, and relationship and family issues.
The main specific benefit issue was the Personal Independence Payment, no doubt reflecting tighter eligibility introduced by the government, followed by Employment and Support Allowance, Attendance Allowance and Housing Benefit.
The top 5 debt issues were council tax, arrears, debt relief orders, credit, store and charge card debts and fuel debts.
Margaret Greenwood MP said:
“Citizens Advice provides an invaluable service to people here in Wirral and the rest of the UK.
“It offers independent, confidential advice in a variety of ways, over the phone, online and face-to-face.
“If someone is struggling with a problem it is important that they seek expert advice at an early stage. That is especially true of debt problems which can easily spiral out of control.
“At a national level Citizens Advice also briefs MPs on the issues that it sees people asking for help with such as the impact of social security changes, energy prices and consumer issues.
“That helps us represent constituents better by raising those issues in Parliament and campaigning for change.
“There are volunteering opportunities available at Citizens Advice so I would urge anyone who thinks they might have the right skills and experience to contact Citizens Advice Wirral.
“It can help boost people’s employability as well as enable someone to contribute to the community.
“Not every problem can be solved, but many can. The right advice and support from an agency like Citizens Advice very often enables people to manage a problem that seemed insurmountable.
“Citizens Advice makes a real difference to many people’s lives here in Wirral.”
